How to create random teams

Type one name per line or paste a whole list into the Names box — a spreadsheet column, a class register, a chat message with names separated by commas. Bullets and numbering are cleaned up automatically. Choose how you want to split the group, press Make teams, and the teams appear as cards you can read at a glance. Not happy with the mix? Reshuffle draws a completely new set of random, evenly sized teams from the same list.

Choose number of teams or people per team

Sometimes you know how many groups you need: four tables, two sides for a match, six breakout rooms. Pick Number of teams and set the count. Other times you know the group size: pairs for a lab, trios for a project, five-a-side. Pick People per team instead, and Wheel Answer works out how many teams that makes. If you only ever need pairs, the random partner generator does it in one click. Either way, you'll never get more teams than there are names.

How uneven totals are handled

Thirteen people don't split neatly into three teams, so some teams get one extra person. The generator always spreads the extras one at a time, so team sizes never differ by more than one — 13 names in 3 teams becomes 5, 4 and 4, never 6, 4 and 3. In People per team mode, a team may be one person short rather than leaving someone out. Every name you enter is placed exactly once.

Ideas for classrooms, sports, workshops and game nights

Teachers use it to set up group work quickly without students choosing their friends; for picking individual students during a lesson, the classroom wheel gives everyone a turn. Coaches split a squad into training sides. Facilitators sort workshop attendees into discussion groups. At a game night, make teams first, then use who goes first to decide which team starts.

How the random shuffle works

When you press Make teams, the whole list is shuffled with a Fisher–Yates shuffle, where every possible order is equally likely. Each step of the shuffle draws a number from your browser's cryptographic random generator, using rejection sampling so no position is favoured. The shuffled list is then dealt into teams. Teams are random and evenly sized — they aren't balanced by skill or ability. The randomness page covers the details.

Questions

What happens if the names don't divide evenly?

Some teams get one extra person. Team sizes never differ by more than one, and everyone is placed in exactly one team.

Can I keep certain people apart?

Not yet. Every split is fully random, so there's no way to keep specific people apart or together. If a split doesn't work for your group, press Reshuffle.

Are the teams random?

Yes. The list is shuffled with your browser's cryptographic random generator, so every arrangement is equally likely. Teams are not balanced by skill.
