Spin a quick classroom brain break

Between a long reading block and the next lesson, a short break gives everyone a moment to reset. Instead of deciding what to do on the spot, spin the wheel and let it choose. The ideas on this page are meant to take one to three minutes and need nothing more than the classroom itself, so you can be back on task almost straight away.

Short movement and quiet break ideas

The sample wheel mixes active and calm options on purpose. Freeze dance, desk drumming and stand and shake out get people moving; count backwards, a 30-second doodle and silent ball are quieter. Mirror a partner sits in between. A mix means the wheel suits both the energetic afternoon and the class that needs to settle down.

Make a brain-break wheel for your class

Replace the samples with the breaks your students already know and enjoy — a class chant, a favourite stretch, a quick riddle. Type them in one by one or paste a whole list. The wheel is saved in this browser, so it's ready next lesson. For longer free-time or weekend ideas outside the classroom, the activity wheel has a broader list.

Use Fair Rotation before repeating activities

This wheel opens in Fair Rotation, so each break comes up once before any of them repeat. Over a week, the class gets the full variety instead of the same favourite three times in a row. If you'd rather every spin could land anywhere, switch to Random.

Project the wheel for the whole class

Press Present for a full-screen wheel with large text that reads well on a projector or smartboard. Students can watch the spin and see the break that comes up. Teachers who want the wheel on a class website or resource page can use Embed to add it there. For picking students rather than activities, use the classroom wheel.

    Adjust activities for your classroom

Every class, room and day is different. Remove any idea that doesn't suit your students, your space or the moment — a cramped room might call for seated stretches instead of dancing — and add alternatives that do. The wheel only picks from what you put on it.

    Questions

Can I add my own brain break ideas?

Yes. Type new ideas into the choices box or paste a whole list, and remove any samples you don't want. Your wheel is remembered on this device.
